McDonald’s has taken steps to further embrace AI technology, with a number of new innovations being tested for use in its restaurants and kitchens.
The fast food giant is experimenting with Alexa-style voice ordering, deep-frying robots and automated beverage equipment at its Innovation Centre in Chicago before rolling out the new technology to selected stores across the country.
The new technology is intended to reduce customer waiting times in addition to making the jobs of employees more straight-forward.
The company said: “We are exploring restaurant innovations to evolve the way food is ordered, cooked and served. We’re testing to see how these innovations can alleviate pressure on restaurant employees, making it simpler and more enjoyable to serve our customers.
It added: “The types of restaurant innovations we’re testing are rooted in a culture of innovation that keeps us looking for better ways serve our customers and support employees.”
The automated deep-frying equipment will be used in the cooking process of fries, chicken and fish products, while the drive-thru automation is part of a strategy to reduce wait times after it was revealed that McDonald’s was lagging behind its competitors in this regard.
The news marks a continuation of the firm’s adoption of technology, with other recent innovations including the addition of self-service kiosks and forming a partnership with Uber Technologies Inc. to test drone delivery in San Diego.
The chain also recently unveiled the new look for its remodelled flagship store in the heart of Times Square.
