Kitchen United has stepped up its expansion plans by signing a lease which will see it operate a kitchen center in Tempe, Arizona.

The GV-backed start-up, which aims to create a new way for restaurant operators to expand via ‘dark kitchen’ centers, plans to open between 10 and 15 new locations throughout the year.

The firm currently operates in Pasadena, California and Chicago, Illinois, and has announced lease agreements in Atlanta, Columbus, Austin, Scottsdale, Los Angeles, San Francisco and a second location in Chicago.

Jim Collins, Kitchen United’s CEO, said “Consumers increasingly seek convenience when it comes to getting their next meal, so growth in off-premise is here to stay.

“Kitchen United offers a unique model, allowing operators to offload congestion in their restaurants caused by the popularity of delivery and pick-up.

“Our goal is to help restaurant operators establish a more efficient way to handle off-premise business and increase customer reach without the significant investment of a brand new build or retrofitting their existing location.

“We have a few spots left in this location for restaurants that want to expand into or within Tempe, and to enable them to take advantage of the boom in off-premise dining.”

The firm’s executive vice president of marketing, Craig Cochrane, added: “Tempe is an excellent market for Kitchen United and the members who have already booked kitchens in this location.

“The residents nearby are adopting food delivery at a rate several times above the national average, which is no surprise for an area full of millennials and Gen Zers.

“In fact, the median age in Tempe is about nine years lower than the national average, largely because of ASU’s central campus, about one block from our location.”

Kitchen United takes a data driven approach to identify the best locations for its kitchen centers, aggregating insights on demographics, income levels and cuisine-specific demand in addition to drive time, traffic patterns and other data.

The new center will be located at 933 East Broadway Road.
