Silcon Valley-based start-up Scotty Labs has been acquired by DoorDash, the company’s co-founder and CEO Tobenna Arodiogbu has announced.
The company, which manufactures autonomous delivery vehicles, is the latest in a string of recent acquisitions by DoorDash, with the delivery giant having also recently purchased on-demand food delivery and catering business Caviar.
The deal, for which financial terms have not been disclosed, further highlights the steps several major firms are taking towards autonomous delivery.
In a blog post, Arodogbu spoke of his delight at the deal. He said: “Our core belief at Scotty has always been that Autonomy + Remote Assistance will be the future of logistics.
“We have intentionally always considered ourselves to be the anti-hype company and focused intensely on developing core infrastructure and algorithms, with a healthy degree of human intelligence, to ensure the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles.
“Our team has done bold things, from remotely driving a car around San Francisco to autonomously (level 2) driving a truck at 4am in California.”
He continued that the company was really excited to be part of the “amazing DoorDash family” and that he would make further announcements in due course.
Various companies, including SRI International, Gradient (Google AI Fund), Horizons, and Hemi had all previously invetsed in Scotty Labs.
