Amazon has announced that it will cease operation of its Amazon Restaurants food delivery service in the US later this month, according to reports.
The service, which launched in 2015 and was in operation in more than 20 American cities, allowed Prime members to order food direct to their door in a fashion similar to services such as UberEats and DoorDash.
According to a report on GeekWire, the decision to shut down the service comes after the retail giant invested $575 million in UK-based food delivery chain Deliveroo last month.
According to GeekWire, an Amazon spokesperson said: “As of June 24th, we will discontinue the Amazon Restaurants business in the US.
“Many of the small number of employees affected by this decision have already found new roles at Amazon, and others will be provided personalized support to find a new role within, or outside of, the company.”
